my grandfather’s magic

my grandfather showed me a tube of chapstick, which i carefully examined. he then made an exaggerated throwing motion towards the window, and, pointing at the red honda that just drove by, confirmed that he had thrown the chapstick into the car.

i was astonished. i searched through the room, digging through bedsheets, crawling under chairs, even checking his pockets, and i still was unable to locate it. until, of course, when he made it reappear, directly into his hand. starting at that moment, i made it my mission to discover his method of sorcery, because there was absolutely no possibility that magic was real.

i began closely watching him, investigating his movements, and, eventually, i discovered his secret: he had been tucking the tube away in a small space between the mattress and the bed frame.
